THE "WALL"

The Wall!

I looked forward to a day of catching up on gossip with old friends, laughing about how we conned cops riding our bikes with  doubles in the pillion! or how we danced in the rain, adam teased boys who walked into "Mount CarmeI College" or bunked classes only to bump into the veritable "Sr G"- principal of MCC!.

Nostalgia surfaced and so did a whole lot of other incidents and memories. The restless me kept looking at my mobile wondering if the signal was low or if there were any calls that I had missed. The day passed through with a few calls when I started feeling that something was amiss, rather I was missing something. It could not be true that my dearest ones would not talk to me....

It was then that the "Wall" dawned onto me!  I looked at the wall and stared at it, it was definitely not blank. Myriad messages and wishes seemed to be filling it up in seconds. Like the dominos effect many who looked at my wall also messaged me! I must admit I did smile at my Wall!. I would like to call it the Virtual Wall that we all are victims to. To my virtual happiness there lay messages and wishes from numerous friends from far and near! As much as I loved reading and responding to them, I could not help but feel, this wall has crept in and intruded our days and lives so much, that now it is actually easier to message on a FB wall rather than talk! The comparision catapulted me to the time where we would make hand made cards and posted colourfuly written inland letters for birthdays!

What did stand out as a contrast that while my freinds were walling me, people from my Virtual relationships like my Bank, Mutual Fund, Jewellery store, my car dealer all called in to wish me personally on my birthday!!

This cliche was somewhat confusing and yes did leave a strange feeling through the day!

So ended my virtual Birthday yet with a vow to ensure that next time around I would rather talk than Wall my friends!!

  1. I understand the feeling, Sumana. I always make it a point to call all my friends from school and college whom I used to have a habit of calling in the pre-facebook days.

For a few years I intentionally didn't have my birthday up on my FB profile. I figured that those who remember it would call me anyway. Then I got earfuls from new friends, the ones who I'd met after the advent of "The Wall". So I gave in and now I enjoy both wall wishes and real wishes.

Of course, just wall posts from dear friends is unacceptable and all my closer friends still do call me like I call them.
